Coming up very soon (I'd better check my flight information), I'm going to a writer's retreat. This will be a first annual event of what I hope will continue.

Writer's Retreat. What is it?

Well, it's fabulous. It's our first one and I'm already excited. :)

This means me and three good writer friends will be hanging out together, just the 4 of us, doing writerly things. Coming up with ideas for either the books we're working on or new ideas for our next books, we will support each other. We will laugh together. We will write. We will retreat to our rooms to write new fresh words without phones ringing or laundry to do or doorbells to answer or dinner to cook or questions to answer or bills to pay...I could go on. I won't.

Also we will be

Brainstorming.

Drinking wine.

Writing.

Drinking vanilla apple cosmos. (or is that a martini?) hmm

Plotting.

Drinking Sweet Tea Vodka Lemonade.

Chatting in the hot tub about writing.

Drinking...whatever is left.

Is that Sangria? Yum.

This is time well spent. In fact, I'd go so far as to say it's imperative.

Writers work alone for the most part. We hunker behind our faithful computers and tap out stories again and again spurred only by our imagination...and coffee...and sometimes wine.

So now and again, we need the relaxation of a long weekend away with our sister writers to feed our passion for writing and gain new perspective.

And laugh in a quiet place away from the routine of our lives.

Can't wait to get there.

How did so much time go by?
A minute ago it was about to be Thanksgiving 2009. :)

Okay, I've been trying to stick to a routine of writing as one of my many New Year's resolutions. Usually, I can finish 250K-300K words a year. 2009 was a low year for me. I let myself get distracted. Then I said yes to time consuming things when I should have screamed a resounding NO!
This year no more Mrs. Nice Guy. Repeat after me, "No, I'm sorry, I don't have time to do ______(fill in the blank) I'm too busy writing."

And I've been such a good little writer so far this year.
Yes...I'm aware it's only January. But I've already written more for January 2010 than I did for either Jan. 2008 or Jan. 2009.
Progress, right? :) (Just nod for me here)

I'm on a mission to double my word count this year.
Wish me luck. And remember my new word for the year is No.

Two weekends ago I attended the Wisconsin Romance Writers of America's conference in Green Bay.
It was in a word...lovely.
The conference was wonderful and very well planned. The people were amazing, friendly and warm. They made me feel right at home. The hotel was exceptional and nestled in woods off the beaten path.
And best of all...I won first place in the Write Touch Readers Erotica/Romantic Category for my book Menagerie. Woo Hoo!

Movie Monday - Special: Ticket Stub Round Up

I'm one of those people who keeps ticket stubs from the movies that I see. I pull them from my pocket and tuck them into cubbyholes on my desk. I have collected quite a stack of them over probably the last couple of years or so. Probably because I'm half pack rat on my Dad's side. Also it gives me an alibi in case I'm ever falsely accused of anything. But I digress. :)

Anyway...in a recent house cleaning frenzy, I've decided to trash them, but not before I list and rate the bunch here. Indulge my trip down memory lane with my favorite past time. :)

On my scale, 5 Stars is best and means I probably went onto buy the DVD when it came out and conversely 1 Star is worst and I mourn the time and money I lost.

Here goes:

3:10 to Yuma - 9/15/07 - Awesome Western! I give it 5 stars...and I "did" buy the DVD.

Watchmen - 4/9/09 - I wanted this to be a better movie. Too grim and some key good story telling elements were ignored. 2 Stars

I Am Legend - 12/14/07 - Will Smith can do no wrong! Loved it. 5 Stars and I own it.

Beowulf: Digital 3D - 12/1/07 - It was okay. I thought the format was interesting 3 Stars.

Shoot 'Em Up - 9/9/07 - Over the top and graphic in many ways. But I thought the story line was excellent. 4 Stars

Invasion - 8/18/07 - Excellent re-make of a classic! 4.5 Stars

P.S. I Love You - 12/31/07 - I saw this in Arkansas with my MIL. Great movie. 4 Stars

Shooter - 3/31/07 - Great movie. Better than expected. Loved it. 4.5 Stars.

The Spirit - I can't find the stub, but I remember the pain and torment of watching it. The reason it gets one star instead of none is that I liked the comic book look of it otherwise...total Dreck. or is it Bleeck? 1 Star

Crank - 9/3/06 - Better than I expected. Still a few scenes stretched past my capacity for belief. 3.5 Stars

The Dark Knight - 8/9/08 - Excellent movie. Sad because it was Heath Ledger's last movie. 4.5 Stars

X-Files: I Want to Believe - 8/9/08 - I have seven seasons and the first movie on DVD. I thought this was pretty good, but the first movie was much better. 3.5 Stars

The Mummy 3 : Tomb of the Dragon Emperor - 8/15/08 - The first two were much better, but I liked this one okay. 3 Stars

Changeling - 11/6/08 - No secret that I went to see this for Jeffery Donovan, but it was an excellent movie. 4.5 Stars.

Valkyrie - 12/26/08 - Tom Cruise is an excellent actor and he was great in this. 4 Stars.

Australia - 12/7/08 - I thought it started out slow, but I liked this movie very much. Plus...Hello...Hugh Jackman! :) 4 Stars

Defiance - 1/19/09 - Loved this movie! Daniel Craig and Liev Schreiber...yum! 4.5 Stars

X-Men Origins: Wolverine - 5/1/09 - I loved this movie! Hugh Jackman and Liev Schreiber...double yum! 4.5 Stars

Star Trek - 5/8/09 & 5/10/09 - Yes. I've already seen it twice. My heart goes pitty pat at the mere mention of this movie. JJ Abrams is a genius storyteller and I give this 6 Stars...because it's my scale and I can if I want to. ;)

It's funny and clever and the dialogue is great...plus...Nathan Fillion has had my rapt attention since Firefly/Serenity.

TV Tuesday: In Plain Sight

I didn't see this show when it first came out, but now I love it.
After watching several episodes during a USA marathon, I was able to catch up on the first season.
I love Mary McCormack in this show. As US Marshall Mary Shannon, she's a smart, strong and feisty heroine in the series. I also like her side-kick Marshall Mann played by Fred Weller. He's goofy sometimes, but not when she needs him in their job as US Marshals. They help look after participants in the witness protection program at their Albuquerque NM location.
The second season just started so go check it out. :)

Movie Monday - X-Men Origins: Wolverine

I went to see X-Men Origins: Wolverine over the weekend. Sigh.
Love Hugh Jackman. Love the story. Love the movie. Love Hugh Jackman. Did I mention that already? :)

Okay then...Love Liev Schreiber, too.

I've watched all of the X-Men movies and I've enjoyed them all.
This one is a little different as far as storyline with respect to the original X-Men movies partially because it's a prequel, but this fourth X-Men movie is no less action-packed. I loved seeing new mutants with new and different powers this go around.
And I'll definitely be in line on day one when the DVD comes out! Can't wait. :)
In my mind it's worth seeing at the theater.

TV Tuesday : House

I love the show House. The acerbic Dr. Gregory House, played by Hugh Laurie, always solves the most unique medical cases.
I've always loved medical shows and this one is particularly funny and unusual.
The funniest thing for me is that his accent on the show is so awesome.
I didn't know he was British until I saw him on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Unlike his television character, he's polite and I adore his accent.

He's funny both on the show and off and multi-talented. He also play the piano and sings in a band. Recently I saw him perform with his band appropriatly named, "Band on TV." :) If you get a chance, check it out.

Abigail Deveronne was given in marriage to the very old Myron Smedly. To make matters worse, after five days of marriage she woke up next to a very dead Myron. Rather than allow her to come home, Pitney is arranging yet another marriage. Pitney is a member of the Saints of Aria sect and is sending Abigail to the planet Raylia by proxy marriage to someone she has never met. Jesse Pelland has vowed to never re-marry after the trickery of his ex-wife. He is determined to be rid of her at very high monetary cost. In the Delocia Space Port Abigail is tricked into a comprising situation for a much needed part for the ship she is traveling on. Jesse just happens to be in the wrong place at the right time and is able to help Abigail. Unfortunately, Jesse winds up with a wife and Abigail became married by proxy a bit sooner.

This story was made fun and sexy by the innocent yet tempting Abigail. Her naïve manner was a great mix for the world traveler Jesse. The two were a perfect combination in Rogue’s Run . The story line was fun with a bit of a surprise towards the end. Jesse and Abigail have a great sexual chemistry and their sexual interaction is so hot. Jesse only wants the best for Abigail and that means allowing her to explore her sexuality. There are plenty of secondary characters in the story and they were all a welcome addition to keep the plot moving. As a first in the Galactic Gunslingers series Rogue’s Run does a great job at leaving the reader wanting for more.

Movie Monday - Changeling

Changeling was a must see movie for me, of course, because Jeffery Donovan is in it. :) And luckily, it was a very good movie too. :)

Movie Monday - Appaloosa

Plot Summary: 1882, New Mexico Territory. Virgil Cole and Everett Hitch are itinerant lawmen, hired by desperate towns as marshal and deputy. The city fathers of Appaloosa hire them after Randall Bragg, a newly-arrived rancher with money and a gang of thugs, disrupts commerce and kills three local lawmen. Cole and Hitch contrive to arrest Bragg and bring him to trial, but hanging him proves difficult. Meanwhile, a widow has arrived in town, Allison French, pretty, refined, and good-natured. Virgil falls hard, and it seems mutual, but there may be more to Allie than meets the eye. Can friendship and skill with a gun overcome a pernicious villain and green-eyed jealousy?

I really liked this movie. I mean what's not to like with Viggo Mortensen and Ed Harris in the leading roles. :) Jeremy Irons is great in the role of a bad, bad guy. There is a little romance. A court trial. A dusty frontier town. And many other traditional wild west offerings which are all set in the late 1800's American West.

Feeling she cannot tell anyone she has the virus, she must get off of Bravura and on to Parsec colony where they have more of the cure available. So Penelope gets on The Dalton, the first transport ship she can to take her to Parsec.

The Dalton is manned by Gray Wyckoff, who at first doesn’t want to take any passengers off world. The crew has just come back from a long journey and the last thing they need is to go off on another one without some down time in between. However, Penelope convinces them to take her to Parsec Colony, but once on board The Dalton the virus goes full force in affecting Penelope.

But lucky for Penelope, Gray and his first officer Nathan are more than ready to help her out. Now all Penelope has to do is get to Parsec Colony and get the cure. Only thing is, more than one person seems to want Penelope to not make to Parsec or get the cure.

Was Penelope infected on purpose? And what happens when medicine sex becomes something deeper, something like love? Will she still feel that way about the Captain of The Dalton when she doesn’t have to have sex or suffer?

Lara Santigo has a sci-fi adventure full of steamy sex, and mystery in Sex or Suffer. We meet Penelope who is a strong independent woman and in charge of herself which does not endear her to the men around her. However, she remains a good person wanting to help others throughout. Gray is a wily captain and he knows he has rules to follow and he tries to follow them, but he can’t help himself from being a rule breaker. He is drawn to Penelope, not just because she is a hot woman who wants sex, but he feels a connection to her that grows deeper for him the more he is around her. I was riveted while reading Sex or Suffer as there is depth of character in Penelope and Gray that lasts until the end. You will not be sorry when you pick up Sex or Suffer – this is a wonderfully romantic story you will want more of!

TV Tuesday : Lost

I adore Lost. I don't care if they leave me hanging from one week to another. That's what they are supposed to do. Answer questions from last week and then ask even more important ones that I'll twist in the wind all week wondering about. :) This is the mark of great television, in my opinion. I watch absolutely everything by JJ Abrams so I've been a Lost fan since the very first episode.

Movie Monday - Body of Lies

I watched Body of Lies on pay per view the other night. I really enjoyed it. Russel Crowe did an outstanding job changing his persona into a not exactly likable political character for this movie. Leo looks great, even though he gets beat up and spends much of the movie with one bleeding wound or another. The plot is intricate and it's one of those movies you really have to pay attention to in order to understand what's going on.

Which leads me to my epiphany... (warning - mini rant coming) I now remember why I like to see movies at the theater. The phone rings incessantly whenever my family wants to sit in the comfort of our home and watch a movie. With On Demand features we are able to pause, but it's a little frustrating having to stop back up and try to keep up with the movie. My poor husband had to watch the movie in pieces between three phone calls and an errand to pick up one of the kids.
I wish I could say, I'm unplugging or turning off all the phones whenever we sit down to watch one. But I have children. I can't do it.
Is there ever a time when we can shut out the world and do what we want without interruption?
My answer...rarely.

TV Tuesday : The Closer

Okay...well Another of my favorite shows has come back in January for my viewing pleasure. I adore Kyra Sedgwick in The Closer. Sigh.
It's smart. It's unexpected. I rarely figure out "whodunit" until the very end and I also adore the personal arc with Fritz her FBI boyfriend.
I've followed this show since the premier and it just gets better and better.
With a wedding coming soon...This season promises to be one of the best.

Aliens is an oldie, but one of my very favorite all time movies ever produced.
James Cameron is one of my favorite movie directors and in my opinion, Aliens is one of his very best.
It includes the genres of Action/Adventure/Science Fiction and an awesome all around story.

One of my favorite television shows has come back on the air to entertain me. Yea!!
It's Medium. Patricia Arquette stars as...yes you guessed it...she's a Medium...sort of.

Set in Phoenix, Arizona...Allison Dubois dreams about crimes and occasionally talks to the dead looking for clues to murders.
The best part for me is how she figures out how to interpret the dreams. Things aren't always as they seem. muwahahaha

Movie Monday - Eagle Eye

I finally got to see the movie Eagle Eye on my home pay-per-view the other night.

My husband and kids had already seen it at the movies when it was in theaters. I must have had a dead line or something to have missed it.
It was a really good movie. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.
The pacing was great. It was very exciting and I thought the over all plot was very intriguing.
On my scale...I'd give it 4 Stars. :)

When Erica Porter gets a new job, an encounter with a sexy stranger in the copy room quickly heats up as a simple kiss under the mistletoe gets steamy. Erica immediately regrets her impulsivity when she learns the identity of her mystery man, but he doesn’t quite feel the same. A case of mistaken identity and Erica’s desire to keep her personal life separate from work nearly ends her relationship with her mystery guy, Quentin Thorne, before it even has a chance to start. Quentin is not one to take advantage of employees, but he is taken with Erica and is determined to convince her to take a chance on him.

With its love-at-first-sight story, this fun read provides readers with a nice escape. Erica and Quentin are great characters whose easy relationship and flirtation I really enjoyed. The characters were very real and while I understood Erica’s fears and hesitancy about getting involved with her boss’s brother, at times I wanted to smack her because I was afraid she’d let a great guy get away. Quentin, a great hero and my favorite character of the story, is very patient and understanding about Erica’s need for discretion. In fact, he is more patient than most probably would be, but he truly cares for Erica and wants her to be happy.

I really enjoyed the humor and romance of this story and definitely recommend it!

I'm implementing a new category to my blog posts called TV Tuesday. For my first entry of course I want to talk about Burn Notice. I'm certain no one is surprised. LOL

Did everyone watch last week's Thursday night (1-26-09) Burn Notice?
The one where Michael is helping the young football player get away from a car-stealing bully?

Can I just say I believe this was the BEST Burn Notice EVER!!! So great!!
I had it recorded (in HD) and managed to only watch it twice so far. :)
If I had the time, I'd keep watching it over and over again.

Come on. I dare you to name a better Burn Notice show. :)

Movie Monday - Kevin Bacon movies

Recently, I was watching my cable free on demand station and caught two Kevin Bacon movies two days in a row. One I'd seen years before but watching it was like watching a whole new movie. The second I hadn't seen or heard of and while very good it seemed a little like an indie film.

The first from 1999 and very scary was called, Stir of Echoes.

The second from 2007 and very sad and emotional was called, Rails & Ties.

My conclusion...Kevin Bacon is an awesome actor. His range is unbelievable. I've seen many of his movies over the years and I'm always struck by how versatile he is.

Another fun thing about watching old movies especially, and by old I mean more than 7 or 8 years old, is seeing glimpses of actors in earlier roles before they became famous for other things. In Stir of Echoes, is the actress from Law & Order: Criminal Intent and also there is the actress from House.

So if you're in the mood for either scary or sad, I recommend either of these.

Getting Started in a New Year...Goals, Motivation and My Conflict

I probably should have posted this blog earlier in the week...like Monday...but I wanted to talk movies on Monday and it's my blog. :)
Recap form Movie Monday? Daniel Craig and Liev Schreiber in Defiance. Recommended and drool worthy...yum. :)

Okay - Back to business.
I'm a firm believer in goals. This is not a secret with anyone who knows me well.
I have my 2009 goals framed and in front of me on my desk. As I complete each one, I mentally check them off with great satisfaction and accomplishment.
A standard goal each year for me is to improve or beat my last year's total word count. As a goal I think it's worthy, but difficult to achieve.

I'm one of those writers who keeps daily track of my word count. I put it in a spreadsheet. It makes me happy. :)

Why then does it seem to be so difficult to get started in the new year?
Does anyone else have this issue?
I have goals. I should be motivated. My conflict?...January is almost always my worst month for total word counts.
So far in 2009 I've written just over 14,000 words which actually is better than last year.
In 2008 by the end of January I'd completed 12,565 words. In 2007, a pitiful 6,298.

Now by the end of 2007 I'd written almost 300,000 words.
In 2008...245,672
My goal for 2009 is to beat 2008. Which was also one of my goals for 2008. Sigh.

I had 8 releases in 2008.
It wasn't a goal for last year, but it makes me feel good saying it. :)

Movie Monday - Defiance

Recently, I went to see the movie Defiance with my family.
We all enjoyed it very much.
I mean it had Danial Craig, Liev Schreiber, Russian accents, a World War II setting, gunfire, explosions, and a great story that happened to be true.
What's not to love?
Personally, I'd give it 4.5 Stars out of 5. :)

As many do, I have a personal rating/review system for the movies that I see.
I'll do a Five star system here for clarity.

5 Stars - and the top rating criteria for a movie in my personal rating system: Would I be willing pay to see it at the theater again?

4 Stars - and next on my scale: Would I make plans to buy the DVD once available in a few months?

3 Stars - third down: Not bad, but I'll wait until it comes to Cable On Demand if I decide to watch it again.

2 Stars - second to the bottom: Not completely sorry I saw it, but I don't plan to watch it again if I can help it.

1 Star - Dead last in my rating system: How can I get my money back for enduring this trash the first time? :)

With reference to Defiance, I could be talked into seeing it again, but likely I won't have time, and I'll definitely buy it when the DVD comes out.

Happy New Year's Eve

In a few hours it will be a brand new year.
Shocking, right?
As usual 2008 zipped by at warp speed and while I accomplished quite a lot, there is always more I wish to do. :)

Each and every year I make a formal list of writing goals to achieve for the next year. I then print them out and frame them so I can keep them front and center throughout the year. In 2008, I accomplished 11 out of 13. Not too bad.
I always do 13 goals each year. It's called a baker's dozen. And 13 has always been a lucky number for me.

As per the usual, I have 13 writing goals for 2009.
Do you have goals writing or otherwise for this year?
If not writing goals, do you have "other" goals you'd like to accomplish?

And now on a completely different note...

Tonight, for my New Year's Eve celebration, I'm making a pitcher of Sangria made possible by my good friend Wendi Darlin. She obviously loves me because Sangria is one of my very favorite beverages.

Rebates... Are they worth the trouble?

Usually, I do believe they are worth the trouble. My husband has very good luck with rebates. He's a computer guy and always talks me into purchases with the promise of sales, discounts and rebates. (oh my!:)) And to be honest, I have to tell you he's very organized about the whole thing when he embarks on a rebate hunt.
He meticulously fills out the paperwork. He scans and makes hard and soft copies of what he sends. He even puts the estimated date to receive his money on our family calender.
Fine. Good. I applaud him.
But why is it so much harder for me to pull this feat of skill and daring off?

Recently I was offered a deal on my annual contact lens purchase. I'd get $30 off my total purchase...IF I bought 4 extra boxes. My oldest son also has contacts and there was a different rebate form and rules etcetera for "his" special rebate.
I had to purchase "8" boxes for his prescription, but at least he'd be set for a year.
Fine. Good. I'm patting myself on the back for my super savings potential.
Contacts are expensive, but I like them. So does my son.

I get home ready to immediately take care of this and get it in the mail.
I pull out the ream of paperwork involved and the receipts and the "official" rebate slips that "Can Not be photocopied" and learn I must mutilate the actual boxes of contacts to send in box tops with my sons rebate, and not the UPC codes. But on mine, I must cut out the UPC codes not the box tops.
Whatever.

So imagine my surprise...I'm sitting at my desk with the oodles of paper work stacked up to my ears containing the microscopic boxes to fill in and I'm reading along with the microscopic fine print on how to redeem the afore mentioned rebates when I discovered a flaw in my savings plan. There is a criteria regarding when we had our eye exams.
What? Why should that matter?
But it does.

I wouldn't have purchased a total of 12 boxes of contacts if I'd known I was 8 days away of being eligible for a full rebate due to the date of my contact lens exam.
Sigh.
I'll still get a little money out of this rebate debacle, but honestly, it barely covers my effort in this endeavor. I had to find scissors for heaven's sake. Then I had to find tape to reattach the little box top tab I'd inadvertently cut off. I had to look for an envelopes, stamps and return labels. I had to highlight purchase dates, and quantities bought and money spend. Plus, remember the microscopic form I had to fill out? I had to print really little letters.
And for what?
Half of what I was expecting.
Fine. Great. I'm never doing this again. I'll leave rebates to my computer geek husband. He's better at it anyway. :)

Spa Day? Yes or No

I LOVE going to spas for relaxation and pampering. I've been to a couple of local places near my house and there are fabulous full-body massages, facials, and pedicures to be had.

About a year ago, I went to one place I'll call Spa A with my mother-in-law and we each had a facial done. Spa A was lovely. The atmosphere at the spa itself was the very definition of relaxation.

We were shown to the ladies locker room and given a locker where we stowed our personal things under lock and key. We were issued snuggly robes and nice sandals. We were then put in a comfortably furnished soothing room to wait while they readied the place for our selected spa treatment.

Also available, while we waited for our personal masseuse to fetch us, was tea, coffee, and a delightful selection of cookies. We decided to wait until after our treatment to partake in the goodies.

The facial was very nice. I’d never had one before so I guess I’m not exactly a great judge, but I really enjoyed the experience. My face and shoulders were massaged, steamed and slathered with various youth inducing products meant to cleanse and refresh me. It worked. I was very refreshed, cleansed and relaxed at the end of my treatment.

Fast forward to a year later. This time I was with my mom. We decided to indulge ourselves with a holiday treat and have full-body massages.

Sigh. The mere mention of massage treatment makes me relax a notch.

This year’s spa day was magnificent. Again we went to Spa A and both had 50 minutes full body massages and I added on a pedicure because I was in desperate need. I’d have to say this was the single best massage I’ve ever had in my life.

My masseuse was amazing and by the time she got to my neck and shoulders towards the end of the time, she had me so relaxed, I fell asleep. Shocking because I’ve never done that before. I’ve had massages in my past and I’ve been very relaxed during them, but I’ve never fallen asleep. Especially while resting on my back. Sigh.

Now I also visited a place recently that I’ll call Spa B. It was a very nice place with similar amenities. A locker room, robes sandals etc. A quiet room to wait. It didn’t have any tea, coffee or cookies, but they had water which is probably better for me anyway. They had a few current issues of beauty magazines to peruse while waiting for my next spa treatment. It was very nice.

At Spa B I had a massage followed by a facial. It was a holiday special and the price was perfect. I enjoyed both sessions very much and yet I think given the choice I’d go back to Spa A.

I can’t put my finger on why. Both places were very similar in amenities and space and atmosphere. Is it loyalty?
Do I secretly feel that since I enjoyed Spa A, I shouldn’t be lured away to Spa B with a good deal on massage prices?

Do you like spa days? I’ve heard that some people don’t care for it and I’m completely stunned by this. If I could afford it, I’d go every day.

Actually, that’s what I plan to do if I ever make big money in writing. Or even average money. For now I write and put the money in an account for my kids college education.

Later on when my children are gone from my financial support, I have no doubt that I’ll write to sustain my addition to spa day full-body massages. I’m thinking about luring my husband into this den of relaxation too.
Muwahahaha…

So my question today is Spa Day: yes or no?
And if the answer is no, why not?
Explain it to me.
I just don’t understand how anyone wouldn’t enjoy this experience. ;)

Melisa Berrand brushed imaginary lint off of her costume, took a breath for courage, but paused before pressing the doorbell. The spooky party house, decorated elaborately for Halloween, awaited her. She wasn’t trick or treating tonight, unless of course trolling for a man counted.

A shiver of apprehension raced down her spine as she faced the ornately carved gothic door. Was someone watching her? Was there some spook or ghoul also attending the party tonight hot on her trail?

She glanced over one shoulder at the dark sidewalk behind her. The dimmed streetlight didn’t even cast enough of a glow to reach the road below.

She patted a hand over her loose curls. Nothing was out of place, except the hair bristling on the back of her neck. The well-manicured yard looked empty. She pushed out a long breath. Get a grip. No one is even out there, let alone paying any attention to you.

Glancing down at her medieval wench costume, she wondered if her attire said, “Sexy party outfit,” or “Desperate single female on the make.” Did she really need a date that badly? Perhaps not a date, but she wanted a man in her life, even if only temporarily.

The mere suggestion of going home alone to hand out candy to the few kids in her apartment building made the decision for her. Blind date nerves trumped loneliness every time.

She was sick of being solo during holidays. Did Halloween even count as a holiday? It didn’t matter. Thanksgiving, followed closely by Christmas, New Year’s Eve, and Valentine’s Day loomed closer and if she didn’t find a steady date soon, Melisa fearfully imagined she was headed for permanent spinsterhood.

Lonely libido kicking her in the core, she resolved to make tonight’s blind date work, no matter what it took. Thinking back to the past couple of abhorrent men she’d gone out with, she hoped tonight’s blind date was at least tolerable in the short term.

She sighed and rang the doorbell. The eerie creaking sound registered seconds before the huge door opened all by itself.

A self opening door? Really?

Head tilted to one side, she leaned forward to peek into the entryway. The lemon scent of well-conditioned hard wood and the waxy smell of burning candles greeted her. The sliver of space she could see was empty.

The door continued to open slowly. A sinister laugh pealed when it reached halfway. Another riotous tingle swept down her spine. Not for the first time, Melisa wondered if meeting a complete stranger at a Halloween party was the best idea.

An acquaintance, or rather Bill, the boyfriend of the new girl in the office, had set up this auspicious blind date. He insisted that the “vampire” she would meet tonight would change her life.

Melisa wasn’t looking for a life change so much as a steady boyfriend to keep from sitting home alone during the coming aforementioned romantic holidays. Although, if he were a vampire, she would miss out on so many cool daytime activities.

Given the beastly behavior of her last boyfriend, foregoing the daylight seemed a small price to pay if this guy would simply not be a bastard. Chiding herself for even the momentary belief in vampires, Melisa gathered her strength. There was no such thing as blood-sucking dead people roaming the earth.

“Enter if you dare!” the sinister voice from within the house bellowed. The entry challenge was followed by maniacal laughter.

Taking a deep breath for courage, she lifted her long wench skirt and stepped across the threshold. A tall man in a mask and a long black cape appeared out of nowhere, startling her. Melisa promptly tripped over her feet. Arms flailing, she landed hard against the man’s body grabbing onto his outstretched arms to keep from falling to the floor.

The caped man slid his hands beneath her arms, clutched her torso gently and steadied her on her feet. The movement brought her face first into his chest. Cheek resting against a firm unmovable body, Melisa looked up and found she embraced a fabulously luscious man.

Her palms slid from his muscular biceps to his solid forearms. His hands remained firmly attached to her torso, which was not a hardship. Having a man’s hands gracing her body after so long without intimate contact made her long for more touching.

“Are you all right?” he asked.

She sucked in a breath to answer and with it came his delectable male scent. Wrapped in his strong arms, she inhaled another lungful of delicious man before responding.

“I’m fine. Thanks for catching me.”

“No problem. Sorry you tripped. The wires for the sound effects run under the step. I told my bone-headed friends not to put them there.”

“It’s all right. I don’t think it was the wires. My serving wench shoes are hard to walk in. I’m not sure why Dutch clogs belong with medieval serving wench’s attire, but they came with the costume.”

Melisa took a reluctant half step away from him without releasing his arms and lifted her foot to show him her clog. He didn’t let her go, either. As he glanced at her foot, she snagged a better look at the man holding her.

Dark, glossy hair framed a tanned, square-jawed face beneath the black mask hiding everything from eyebrows to cheekbones. A lock of straight, dark hair graced his forehead and rested above one eyebrow. His eyes, currently focused on her foot, were a sharp vivid blue and she decided he was incredibly easy to look at even with the mask. In fact, he was gorgeous. He lifted his gaze and studied her face intently with his vibrant sapphire eyes. When he grinned, she saw fangs.

Was this man her date? Oh, please.
